Daily Challenge for 8/3/21

Good Morning,

We received a ton of suggestions for bread types yesterday! I had completely forgotten about sweet quick breads, but was thrilled so many of you reminded me of them.

This morning I am going to be making Iraqi flatbread. Making bread around here is really the norm. Fresh homemade bread of some sort is made pretty much every week. With so many types out there, I could probably make a different kind every week for the entire year…that’s a thought! I’ll put it on my list of goals for 2022: Make a different type of bread every week. Wouldn’t that be something!

We will continue on our Sandwich Journey this week, but today we have a little something different. Last night I realized that today is National Watermelon Day. Well, as soon as I saw that, we headed up to Aldi and picked up a watermelon. They are on sale for $3.89 this week.

Now, we love watermelon, but the reason I really wanted a watermelon wasn’t for eating it. Although we will definitely enjoy all the wonderful, juicy, red pulp from the watermelon, what we needed was the shell. I found a cool experiment for a Watermelon Volcano on the internet and figured this would be as good a time as any to do it.

For anyone that would like to give this a try, it’s a lot of fun. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 Watermelon
  • 1 Cup Baking Soda
  • 3-4 Tablespoons Dish Soap
  • Red Food Coloring (optional)
  • Vinegar (the amount depends on how big your watermelon is)

Probably the most challenging part of this experiment was cleaning out the watermelon like a pumpkin. We sliced off a small portion from one end of the watermelon and then dug out the pulp with a spoon — just like cleaning out a pumpkin for carving. Once that part was done, the fun began. Now, I’d love to challenge each and every one of you to try this, but I know many of you may not have all the ingredients. Therefore, if you can do the Watermelon Volcano, great! Otherwise, below are a few watermelon themed worksheets you could work on or you can answer the questions at the bottom of this post about…you guessed it — Watermelon.

Zack and I are going to be making a Strawberry-Watermelon Slush later today and we’ll be posting the video on Facebook and share it in tomorrow’s post as well. Maybe you’ve got a recipe or two you like to use watermelon in and could share that today as well!

However you spend National Watermelon Day, make it a good one.
