Applying for SSI

Applying for SSI can take between 3 and 5 months and cannot be done until your young adult turns 18. Try to schedule your interview with Social Security to take place immediately after your young adult turns 18.

To apply for SSI, contact the Social Security office closest to where you live and schedule an appointment on or as close to your special needs adult’s 18th birthday. (Click HERE to see all the Social Security Offices in Macomb County.) In Michigan, the SSI application is also the Medicaid application and if your young adult qualifies, your interview for SSI is also your interview for MiCAP or food benefits.

When you apply for SSI, there are certain documents your special needs adult will need to bring with them:

  • Copies of birth certificate and guardianship paperwork
  • Social Security Card
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of doctors, hospitals, clinics, school teachers, social workers, etc.
  • Dates seen
  • Medications
  • Medical records/evidence
  • Stock, bond, other asset information information. NOTE: A person may not have more than $2000 in assets to be eligible for SSI.
  • Driver’s License or State ID
  • Family members (all who are living in the same house as Adult) social security numbers

When you call to make your appointment, you can ask for a complete list of documents you will need.
