Minutes

Meeting opened with introductions, including Julie Berger, the new LPG president.

Principal John Nader delivered the Principal/Asst. Principal’s report: Lutz held its final PAWS assembly of the year. John and Nick DeVault, Asst. Principal, had a pizza lunch with students who amassed enough PAWS points – 400 are needed, a maximum of 4 can be earned per day. There will be a Completer’s assembly on Thursday.

Account balance: New treasurer Ilene Bernstein could not attend tonight’s meeting, but reports that our balance will be $11,356.99 after the recently written $799 check for 34 Completers’ banquet tickets clears. We’re in the process of changing the signatories on LPG’s bank account to add Julie and Ilene and remove past president Kim Marchiori and former treasurer Carol Renkert.

Completer’s Ceremony: About 330 people attended the dinner and ceremony at the Italian-American Cultural Center. Thirty-four completers got certificates and a good time was had by all.

We set a schedule of LPG meetings for the 2018-19 school year: Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11, all at 6:30 p.m. In 2019, Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 12, April 9, May 14, and June 11. The Halloween Dance is Thursday, Oct. 25 with Lisa, Paul and Beth on the committee. The Lutz and Beyond seminar, at which parents can meet with area service agency representatives, will be held at the same time as the dance.

We discuss the idea of serving pizza at all three dances, instead of just Halloween. Most in attendance support the change. Barb Parker proposed having an alumni dance, but John and Nick will have to check with the MISD on the legality and liability associated with the idea.

Lisa D., the new LPG vice president, is trying to put together an email list/database of parents and guardians. Also, LPG now has a separate Google account and a Facebook page. The page with have no pictures or video due to confidentiality issues and no one can post except for the moderator. It will provide basic information on meetings, dance dates, etc.

The Snow Ball was set for Jan. 17th, 2019 (Ilene and Norma will co-chair) and the Hawaiian Dance was set for April 25th, 2019 (The Johnsons will co-chair with Julie). The Christmas Lunch is tentatively set for Dec. 20th, with more discussion to come next month.

We briefly talk about the closing of Macomb Academy, putting 110 students in limbo. About 40 will transfer to Rising Stars Academy. Some families have made inquiries are Lutz and STEP, but those programs don’t accept referrals after May 1. Nick says discussions are ongoing with the MISD about the future of Macomb Academy.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
