Minutes

Principal John Nader’s report: We are heading into a mid-winter break next Monday. Our new jobs sites, Shelby Nursing Care and EA Graphics, are going well. John then explained the proposed millage on the Macomb County ballot next month, after the required 51% of local districts petitioned the MISD to request the placement. The net result is that every student will get a net increase of $400 in foundation grants. However, there are certain restrictions on how that money is to be spent. Mary Johnson noted that the MISD superintendent has posted an article on the ISD website about the millage.

Old Biz:

LPG President Julie Berger said she had spoken with Janni M., who was unable to attend tonight’s meeting, about the upcoming Valentine’s Day Dance. Our bank statement hadn’t arrived before Janni left for her cruise, so balance as of last month was $16,806, minus $2,099 for spirit wear check. There will be some expenses for the dance, though we will probably end up breaking even. We will have pizza, heart-shaped cookies and popcorn. Lisa D. will order the pizza from Sorrento’s. We appear to be all set for the dance. (We talked briefly about what would happen if a predicted snowstorm forces cancellation of school and the dance.)

Sandy had a suggestion for spending some of the money we have. We’ve had this discussion before. We don’t really want to do a big fundraiser if we’re not spending money we have Sandy suggested doing a survey of what the school might need or want, such as a bench. Previous president suggested using some of the money for a class gift. (A bench costs about $700 )We talk about setting a cap on how much the gift can cost, so one year’s class won’t try to outdo another. Maybe compile a list of possibilities, pick the top three and let that year’s Class of Completers vote on what the gift will be.

Maybe send out a survey of teachers and others in the building, bring back the results next month.

Teacher appreciation week is not same week as Special Olympics. We decide the teacher luncheon should be Thursday, May 7 .

Julie wants to do something every day of teacher appreciation week. In addition to lunch, each teacher will get a $10 Tim Horton’s card (Total Cost about $700). Lisa brought in some samples of clever cardholders; she will be making them for us. We discuss ideas for some small tokens for the other two days, possibly popcorn or muffins. We will take this up again at next month’s meeting.

New Biz :

We talk about switching the meeting night to Monday for the next couple of months, as some LPG members have Tuesday commitments. We decide to switch March, April, and May meetings to Monday, but leave the June session on Tuesday for now. The new dates are: March 9, April 13, May 11. June is the potluck meeting. August will be Julie’s and Lisa’s last meeting.

Sunglasses will be purchased again the year for field for Field Day, which is May 21st.

New LPG officers: Julie hasn’t got confirmation yet, but looks like everything will be covered except for vice president, Lisa D’s current position.
