Lutz Parents Group
Notes from June 11, 2019
We held our second annual potluck to welcome parents of incoming students, and the meeting was well attended. After the meal, everyone introduced themselves.
Principal’s/Asst. Principal’s Report: John Nader said Lutz welcomed nearly 40 new students and their families to our school during a new-student orientation last Thursday. Families met with parents of current students and viewed a video made by Lisa D, our LPG vice president. Later that day, John took the 2019 completers to the Tiger Game. Nick recapped last month’s Field Day, which was a success despite being moved inside due to inclement weather. Big thanks to Lauren, who organized the event. She said 55 people volunteered their time to help at the event. L
The balance of the LPG bank account is $14,495.77, although some payments still need to go out for such items at as Spirit Wear, also food and drinks. A couple of deposits also are pending.
LPG Treasurer Ilene Bernstein’s daughter is completing this year, so the LPG has voted Janni McLean as our incoming treasurer to replace her. Current officers, President Julie Berger, Vice President Lisa Dukicin and Secretary Jackie Galvan, will continue on in their posts.
Hawaiian Dance Recap: Dance was a success. It was the first time we’ve offered pizza at the Hawaiian Dance, and co-chair Julie B. said everyone was happy with the change.
Ann Martin gave a recap of the Weingartz fundraiser. We had a ton of help, and the weather held out. We made $506, a record. Our food prep class made cookies that Lisa put in little Lutz-logoed bags and gave them to folks who ordered a hot dog combo. We’re definitely ready to do it again. We had a lot of people leave their change as a donation. It’s an easy way to make money.
Ann also recapped Spirit Wear, which was delivered today. Everything was packaged and sent to classrooms to go home with students. This sale is not a moneymaker; it is generally priced to be affordable for all students. Ann doesn’t have the final numbers yet, but we sometimes make $40 or $50.
Lisa D gave us an update on our newest dance, the Gold/Silver Dance scheduled for Thursday, July 25. We want this to be a special dance at which completers can say good-bye to their friends and incoming students can be welcomed to the school. Zack Attack will be DJ-ing, pizza will be served and Lisa and her posse of volunteers are planning lots of special touches. Invitations will go our before the July break.
After some discussion, we decide to stick with Tuesday nights for LPG meeting, usually second Tuesday of the month.
Lauren reminded everyone that the annual Talent Show is scheduled for June 25th, at 8:30 am. : talent show is June 27th, 8:30 a,m. DVDs of the show are available for $5.
LPG fall meeting schedule: We will decide that at our Aug. 13, 6:30 p.m., meeting. This year’s Completers Banquet is scheduled for Aug. 8 at Villa Penna on Hayes (after many years at the Italian Cultural Center). Invites have gone out. The LPG pays for each completer. Families can also attend.
One last item of note from Julie. At the recent MISD volunteer breakfast, Julie spoke with Sal from the Martha T. Berry facility, who works with many of our students. They were tossing around ideas for some sort of alumni gathering, maybe a picnic. He would like to help sponsor such an event, but we decide to discuss this further in the fall. There are logistics to be figured out, such as insurance costs, where it would be held, how to contact alumni. We’ll need to ask parents of completers if we can have their contact information.
