May 2019 Meeting Minutes

Lutz Parents Group

May 14th, 2019

Minutes

Ann Martin: Says she won’t be turning in the Spirit Wear order until Thursday, in case of stragglers. Delivery is June 11.

Assistant Principal Nick DeVault was unable to attend as he is at another meeting. Acccording to Principal John Nader, Staff really enjoyed the teacher/staff appreciation luncheon. Macomb County Regional Special Olympics was a dreary cold day, very soggy, but the kids still has fun. It’s always a good day. Channel 2 covered it.

The LPG bank account balance as of May 9th balance was 15,072.30, but we have numerous receipts that still must be paid.

Bob and Mary Johnson are not at the meeting, so Julie Berger gave us a recap of the Hawaiian Dance. It went well. Everyone was happy having the dance, the food and the new movie/sensory room in the same area. It makes it easier to keep track of our students.

Lauren said parents of students in the movie room were pleased. Most stayed in the room, although a couple went in and out. She thinks it went over well. She also provided Hawaiian-themed coloring sheets and other games. About 10-12 students attended.

We collected $593 for the dance, 118 people bought tickets. John thought the gym looked really nice. Parents thought it looked fabulous. Mary and Bob Johnson bought extra decorations, some paper goods, for which they didn’t want to be reimbursed. Paul and Beth brought desserts. We paid for the pizza and DJ Zach. We also tried a ham and pineapple pizza, given the Hawaiian theme which went over pretty well.

The MIAble Seminar, which took place in the cafeteria during the dance, was very well attended, about 50 people were there. It was a good informational session.

Julie said that overall, staff appreciation lunch was a success. Everyone who signed up to bring something did so. There was a bit of confusion with the drinks. A mom had sent them in the day before, but no one could find them. We eventually located them in the student’s locker.

Lauren and Lisa talked about Field Day, which is next week. Lauren is still looking for volunteers, but there will be enough, although some games will have only one person. She’ll notify people a few days before to let them know what they’ll be doing.

Lisa D: LPG bought 400 pairs of Lutz-embossed sunglasses (also got an additional nine defective ones) She’ll bring them in the day before and leave them in the classrooms so they’ll be available the next morning.

Kate Bolger (sp ??) donated the dunk tank. John, Nick, Vinnie and Jessica have all agreed to be targets.

We will have a PAWS assembly before field day where tickets are drawn for students to get a chance at the dunk tank.

Ann Martin: re Weingartz. We’re all set up and have enough volunteers. It will be fun. John says Pam unable to get a date for a Special Olympics fundraiser. We also will be supplying thank-you cookies baked by our students with each order

June 6th is an open house for new students. Some parents, including LPG President Julie Berger, will be there to talk about their experiences.

Bob Johnson, who co-chaired the Hawaiian Dance, (arrived late) offered some thoughts on the dance: We need more chairs in the Wildcat room for parents, we should have a photo corner with props (photos can be given to the teachers who can give them to the parents, without having to put them on line). We can also put the photos into a slide show that the kids can watch during the dance. We would need a screen and a projector for that. Also thinking of changing the setup so there’s no line at the door.

If anyone has any other ideas, let Bob and Mary know.

New Business: Ilene Bernstein is leaving the LPG at the end of the year, so we will need a new treasurer. Janni McLean has agreed to take on the job. We will finalize this change at our next meeting.

New Dance: Lisa D said the Silver and Gold Dance is an event for students who are completing, and for those staying on so they can have a “last hurrah.” We’ll also invite all the new students who will be starting io the fall. New students and completers won’t be charged. Invitations will go out in new student packages. The dance is set for July 25th. It will feature pizza, a DJ, and some special desserts. Lisa is thinking about cakes from Kroger, because they have hired lots of our students. We have some surprises that we’d like to keep from completers until the dance. John will include a save-the-date in this week’s announcements.

Julie proposed doing something everyday for teacher/staff appreciation week next year.

We also talked about a student survival kit for new students.

Our next meeting on June 11 is a potluck. You can sign up to bring a dish, or just come and enjoy the food and company.
