Principal’s Report: Nick DeVault reports that a new venue for the completer’s banquet has been selected, Villa Penna. Also, John Nader reminded everyone that the Special Education Fair is set for Saturday, Oct. 20 at the MISD. Ron Suskind, who wrote a book about his son, is the featured speaker.
Also, a reminder that Parent/Teacher Conferences are set for Thursday, Nov. 15.
October is anti-bullying month and Lutz students have been given buttons that read “Choose Kindness” to wear. Teachers and others will be handing out smiling-face emojiis to students who are being kind.
Update on Halloween Dance, set for Oct. 25. Paul, one of the co-chairs, will be checking to see how far in advance we have to order pizza for the party. We discuss paring down the order from plain cheese and cheese/pepperoni pies to just cheese/pepperoni, but decide against that because some students don’t eat meat. Also, we will be serving apple cider instead of Kool-Aid. Janet reports that we have lots of dessert donations.
Lisa D said 18 parents had volunteered to help, with eight of them responding to her recent email. John said we will also have student volunteers from Macomb International Academy and Chippewa Valley high schools.
John urged all parents to attend the annual Lutz & Beyond seminar, held at the same time as the Halloween Dance. It will offer lots of information about services available for our kids after they leave Lutz.
Julie B and other parents will be making dinner for teachers on conference night. LPG typically supplies a meal on that day. Food will be available between 2 pm and 8 pm.
At previous meetings, we discussed starting fundraisers involving Kroger and Amazon, where a percentage of purchases gets donated to our school. But we have determined this will not work for LPG, because we don’t have the proper tax documents and thus don’t qualify for the program.
Norma gave us an update on the Achatz Pie sale. So far, she’s gotten 12 orders, but the sale continues for another week. Norma will also need volunteers to help when the pies are delivered to the school on Nov. 1. Information about the sale is available on LPG’s website and Facebook page.
John talked about our upcoming Lottery Tree fundraiser, where we raffle off $100 worth of scratch-off tickets at $1 for one chance, $5 for six chances and $12 for ten chances.
A table with samples of Spirit Wear will be set up in the school lobby on conference day. The sale runs through Thanksgiving, with orders delivered well before Christmas. This is not a fundraiser, but an opportunity for students and families to buy affordable Lutz clothing to wear or as gifts.
Teacher Lauren K. reminded us that the Lutz student council election is underway, with voting scheduled for Nov. 7.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
