September 2019 Meeting Minutes

Meeting Notes

Sept. 10, 2019

Introductions and sign in.

Principal’s Report: John Nader said Lutz staff liked the new-school year gifts from LPG. These included planners and weekly pill holders filled with little slogans for each day. Very well received. Also, a parent whose son completed this past year donated a Costco gift card for more than $300 in his honor to LPG. Tomorrow, Lutz is hosting a soccer scrimmage for three schools. Next week, Lutz is trying something new: We’ve invited all the bus drivers and aides in for a meet and greet, as there are lots of new drivers. Nick tells us three new vans are to be delivered soon. Two passenger and one cargo. They are used to transport students and equipment.

Also, a new security system is being installed. Staff will have photo IDs that allow them to come in and out; visitors will have to be buzzed in by office staff. There will be a letter going out to explain the system, which is being installed at all MISD schools.

Tony Wozniki, school social worker, joined the meeting.

The LPG Account balance is $13,848.40. All checks have cleared, so we are starting fresh after Janni writes checks today.

Upcoming Halloween Dance: co-chair with Lisa D. and Sherry Page. Janni will chair the Valentine’s Dance. Bob and Mary Johnson will chair the Hawaiian Dance. As always, we are looking for parents willing to serve as co-chairs. Lutz and Beyond, a parent/guardian seminar which provides information for our students after they leave Lutz, takes place simultaneously. Representatives from Disability Network, the Arc and Social Security will make presentations. Community Mental Health isn’t sending anyone, but information will be available about its services. The seminar takes place in the quad area.

Halloween Dance invites will go out at the beginning of October

Lisa says the invitations are ready to go, but Zak the DJ still needs to be booked. Pizza will be served. Cider. Hot caramel with apple slices and donut holes. She will be requesting a few more supplies, but everything is pretty much all set. Sandy will bring her blow-up pumpkin. Lisa also proposed serving coffee and tea for parents at the dances. We think it’s a good idea and Nick says we can use Lutz’ large coffee maker.

Still no firm date for parent-teacher conference: probably Nov. 14th or the 21st.

Ann Martin: Spirit Wear Sale. She’s hoping to have samples at the Halloween Dance. Its Lutz-themed clothing sold at or near cost. We try to keep the price point low so it’s affordable. Last year, we did a survey of what parents wanted, so we chose items that people requested. The fall sale generally has more cold weather gear. We need to find out what colors the job sites require. (Mostly white or blue) , so we can offer polos that kids can wear to their work sites. The clothing will be delivered before Christmas.

Achatz Pie Sale: Norma ran it last year and is willing to do so again this year. She passed around a pie brochure, which will be coming home with students next week. We then have 4 weeks to sell the pies. We raised more than $1,300 last year. They don’t have all the pies they sell in the stores, but you can buy gift certificates. The sale starts on Sept. 19th, ends on Oct. 14th. Delivery on Oct. 30. Pies are delivered frozen and can be frozen for several months. She’ll need 3-4 volunteers to help on delivery date. Parents will be able to get them between 5-6:30 on Oct. 30.

Parent volunteer sheet will go home soon with students. Parents can volunteer to help with various activities.

Barb Parker makes a great suggestion: students should be involved in Teacher Appreciation week, since these folks are their teachers. Julie wants to do something every day for staff/teachers.

Other: John: last month, we talked about a memorial for former principal Glenn Helfer. We’d talked about getting a bench inscribed with his name, 4-foot bench identical to the one we already have in front of the school. It’s $563 for the bench, inscription and shipping. (no maintenance, as it’s made of polymer). John will call Janni with a total so she can write a check. Poly Products is the company.

Barb Parker gave us an update on efforts to organize a Lutz alumni event. Lisa and Barb have put together a flyer that Barb will take to places that she knows our folks work at or go to. It has a disclaimer that it’s sponsored by LPG, not the school.

New Biz: We have lost our two retailers that hosted out Retail Support Class. Lord and Taylor is closing, and the Salvation Army has jettisoned all of its volunteers, including our kids. Lutz staff is working hard to find new partners, but any parent with potential prospects should call Nick or John

Our next meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at 6:30 pm.
