On their 18th birthday special needs individuals, like all individuals, become a legal adult and there are many things that need to be considered.

Following is a list of tasks that should be completed for your special needs adult.

• Obtain a Michigan State ID Card
• Apply for Guardianship
• Apply for SSI/Medicaid/Food Assistance (MiCAP)
• Set-up a Representative Payee Account
• Apply for Home Help Services
• Register for Selective Services – All males are required to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday regardless if they are disabled or not. This can be done online by clicking on the link HERE.
